CHAPTER FIVE
IZZY
Between the incessant whistling of the wind and the cabin growing colder by the minute, I couldn’t sleep. Emmett’s soft snores mingled with the dog's, rubbing their rest right in my face. I’d fallen asleep long enough for the fire to burn out, but the cold dragged me from slumber and kept me from returning to the escape my dreams afforded.
Wrapping my armstighteraround myself, I pressedtighterinto the corner of the sofa, trying to capture any heat from its edges.
The bed looked so warm.
But it contained the disgusting older man who’d only helped me after I’dgoneagainst my morals to touch him. He’d cover me in his… grossness. Thengonetobedand slept like a baby.
Reaching into mybag, I pulled out my phone. Still no signal. With a groan, I tossed it back in mybag. The dog looked up at me through sleepy eyes, and I patted the couchseatbeside me. His warmth was preferable to Emmett’s.
‘Come on, Chunk,’ I whispered, patting the seat.
Stretching, he stood on thebed, before hopping down and coming over to me with a wagging tail. His movements were slow and steady until he pushed his furry head into my lap and demanded pets.
Sinking my fingers into his thickfur, I smiled.
‘You’re a good boy, aren’t you? Shame you’re stuck here with him, huh?’
Chunknuzzled into me while I stroked his silken ears.
‘Come on up, I need someone to keep me cozy,’I pleaded.
He glanced back over at the bed, before relenting me and climbing up beside me.
‘Yes. Thank you,’I mumbled, tuckingmyselfin behind him and laying out on the couch. Hiswarmthfiltered through hisfurand into me, and I found tears springing at the gentle touch.
‘I’m so far from home,’I whispered. ‘Doing things I promised Daddy I wouldn’t. I’m scared.’
Thedogsighed as I buried my face against him, muffling my sobs in his thickfur. His solid presence didn’t shift as I commiserated withmyself. Eventually, thewarmthand the exhaustion won out.
My eyes fluttered closed after a last look at the slumbering man across the cabin.
