Chapter One
“ I f I could choke the life out of him and get away with it, I would,” Kimora growled.
She slammed her laptop shut and glared at her best friend. It was late on a Friday night, and they were seated at her kitchen island with papers scattered along the marble counter.
“Why am I getting the evil eye?” Laura gasped. Her brown eyes widened to saucers. Her long dark hair was pulled up into a ponytail. The moment they had arrived at Kimora’s home, they had got to work. “I didn’t do anything!”
Kimora playfully grinned at Laura. It wasn’t right to take out her frustrations on her bestie who just happened to be her assistant as well. Working late at home and on the weekends was unfortunately the norm for Kimora. If she was going to make a name for herself then she would have to put in the hard work. She loved what she did and she wasn’t going to let anyone get in her way.
Even if he looked like a sex god.
Or was one of the top cardiothoracic surgeons in the nation.
Nope. She didn’t care. Kimora tucked her chin-length hair behind her ear. She sighed and reached for the bottle of wine they had yet to open.
“Because you just happen to be here…” Kimora chuckled. She stood and picked up the opener so she could uncork the lovely white wine she was infatuated with. After a long workweek, she deserved to indulge in something that would help her relax.
“Well, what you should do is march to his office on Monday and go confront him.” Laura hopped down from her seat and went over to the cabinet and took out two glasses.
Kimora rolled her eyes. If only it were that simple. She had already thought about that option. The man of discussion was someone who had a very tight and busy schedule.
“I spoke with his secretary, and he doesn’t have an available meeting time until September,” Kimora replied dryly.
It was only July.
“Seriously? So there is never a day that he is in the office working where you can have a side conversation with him? It doesn’t have to be an official meeting. You know, five minutes for you to cuss his ass out,” Laura said smoothly.
They shared a hearty laugh while Kimora opened and poured them two hefty glasses of wine. What she wouldn’t give to lay into Dr. Kane Livingston. She didn’t know why the surgeon was throwing up roadblocks in her research. Kimora was a lead molecular geneticists, and she was on the verge of one of the greatest discoveries the world had ever seen, but one asshole of a surgeon was getting in her way.
Dr. Livingston was a brilliant surgeon. She knew of his reputation in the operating room, with his patients and staff. Everyone loved him. He was the best surgeon around. People came from all over the world to see him. He’d been featured in countless worldwide medical journals due to a few techniques he had crafted.
Not that Kimora wasn’t as accomplished. She was paid top dollars at their hospital for her work. The organization believed in her and ensured she had the funding to do her research, which was in the direct correlation of inherited heart disease. If she were able to isolate it and alter it, then she could practically stop people from inheriting the deadly gene.
So why wouldn’t Dr. Livingston want to work with her? Her study would help not only his current patients but their children as well.
“Well, if I ever do get the chance to sit that man down, I will give him a piece of my mind.”
They made their way into Kimora’s living room and plopped down on the oversized couch. Maybe she could catch him in the hospital and corner him. She could find out his operating schedule and stalk him. That may work.
Kimora took a sip of her wine and tucked her feet under her. She ran her fingers through her short hair and exhaled.
“What you need to do is to take a break,” Laura said.
“I don’t have time for a break,” Kimora muttered. She couldn’t even remember the last time she’d taken a weekend for herself where she didn’t log on to her computer, much less went on a vacation. Here she was, a thirty-six-year-old workaholic who was successful, single, and had no children. She would say she was happy with her life. She would have thought she would have been married with a couple of kids by now, but she’d admit she just hadn’t found that special person.
There had been plenty of opportunities and even a called-off engagement in her past. None of the men she’d dated before were someone she felt she could be with forever. She had chosen not to settle, and if that meant she should start adopting cats and dogs, so be it.
“Well, I know exactly what you should do.” Laura snickered. She grabbed her cellphone and opened an app to show Kimora. There was a hunky guy on the screen. “Let’s create you an account.”
“An account for what?” Kimora raised her eyebrows. She took a gulp of her wine. What was she trying to sign her up for? She knew her schedule and that Kimora did not have time for extracurricular activities.
“So you can get your back blown out.” Laura laughed.
“Laura!”
She fell into a laughing fit. Tears rolled down her face as she glanced over at Kimora. She didn’t know what was so damn funny. Was this a prostitution app? She definitely didn’t need that. Her battery-operated boyfriend was enough for now.
“I’m just playing.” Laura wiped her face with the back of her hand. She shook her head and moved closer to Kimora on the couch. “It’s a dating app, so unless you hit it off with a guy, your back will be safe.”
“I don’t know, Laura.” Kimora sighed. She took another sip of her wine and listened to Laura describe how the app worked. As she watched Laura scroll through the app, she began to think that maybe she was right. Maybe she did need a distraction from work and life. She couldn’t even think of the last time she’d gone out on a date with a man.
She grimaced when the memory came forward. It had been with another researcher from a visiting hospital.
Worst date ever.
She’d never realized how boring the conversation could be with a fellow intellect. Well, at least his conversation had been boring. He wanted to talk shop non-stop while she had wanted to just relax and speak of anything else but work.
“The one thing about this app is that all of the men, or women, look as if they could be on the front of a romance book,” Laura said with a straight face.
Kimora blinked and snatched the phone from her.
“Let me see this,” she murmured.
Laura was right. She moved from profile to profile, and she had to hand it to her, each guy looked as if he would be perfect for the cover of a smutty book. There were men who appeared to be cowboys, models, first responders, and even one or two who were Vikings. Kimora used to love reading romance books. It was a pastime that she had gotten away from as she’d progressed further in her career.
What could she lose? Go out on a date with a man who resembled a Greek god? Even if his conversation was terrible, at least she’d have some eye candy and hopefully a good meal out of it.
“Okay. Fine,” Kimora muttered. She handed the phone back to Laura who squealed her delight.
Laura snatched the phone back from her. “This won’t take me long to set up for you. Give me your phone.” She bounced around on the couch with excitement lining her face.
Kimora passed it to her and wasn’t sure if she was going to regret this. If anything, she could always delete the app.
“Don’t make me look bad,” she grumbled. She tossed back the rest of her wine and sat forward to refill her glass. She was going to need a lot of wine for this. She couldn’t believe she was going to use a dating app. Never in her wildest dreams had she ever seen herself signing up for something like this.
“Girl, you are gorgeous, intelligent, and have a great job. What man wouldn’t want to take you out? You are going to have to beat the men off you.” Laura laughed.
“Then why aren’t they lining up now without an app?” Kimora questioned.
Seriously, though. Laura was right. She was a fucking catch, and her dating life hadn’t always been that great. Where did one meet a good man nowadays? She wasn’t one to go to clubs. Once in a blue moon, she and some friends would meet up at a bar for girls’ night. She had learned her lesson about trying to date someone in her field.
So again…where were all the good men?
Probably married, Kimora scoffed to herself. She sat back and took another sip of her wine while she watched Laura’s fingers fly across the screen.
“Which picture do you want to use?” Laura glanced up from the phone.
Kimora leaned over and opened her photo app. They scrolled through her selfies and other pictures that had her in them.
“Oh, what about this one. You looked amazing in that two-piece.”
“Um, no.” Kimora skipped that photo. She, Laura, and some friends had gone to Costa Rica a few years ago. Just seeing the pictures brought back so many memories and the desire to travel. Again, her friend was right. She needed a vacation. She found a professional picture of herself from a conference. “How about this one?”
“Absolutely the fuck not. That makes you seem all preppy. They want to see your personality in the photo. That will help your future baby daddy connect with you.”
“I’m not seeking a baby daddy.” Kimora rolled her eyes. She wanted a life partner. Someone who she would fall deeply in love with. A man who would become the father of her children. Nothing against women and their baby daddies, but that was not how she wanted to live life. Plus on this app, she wasn’t sure she would find the one on here.
“This is the one!” Laura nodded.
Kimora stared at the photo. It was a great picture of herself. She remembered that trip. It was a business trip she’d taken down to Sydney, Australia. It had been the first time she’d ever been to Australia and she’d got to do it in the name of research. She had snapped a selfie of herself with the Sydney Harbor Bridge behind her. Happiness radiated from her face in the picture.
“Yeah, that’s a good one.”
“Perfect.” Laura finished doing whatever the app required of her before she sat back on the couch with a wide grin. She tossed the phone to Kimora. “Done.”
“Now what?” Kimora caught it in midair. She turned it around so she could see her profile page. She scanned it quickly and raised her eyebrows. Laura was good. She had Kimora sounding like one hell of a catch. Hell, she’d date herself if she could.
“We wait to see if you are matched with anyone or you can start scrolling through and see if anyone catches your eye.”
