Epilogue

“ F or Mrs. Sutton in room 309, I want a CT scan of her chest ordered,” Kane stated.

The resident physicians surrounding him took notes. They were meeting at the end of the hallway of one of the nursing units. He’d had a long day in the operating room before he had to run inpatient to round on patients. Thankfully, the first- and second-year residents were able to see the patients while he had been completing an operation. He bit back a yawn and closed that patient’s chart.

It was the end of the day, and it was time for him to assess the patients he had missed earlier since he had been called away for surgery. He hadn’t gotten much sleep in the last few days. When it was his turn to cover the hospital, he worked long hours that included seeing patients inpatient, operations, and still seeing a couple of patients daily outpatient. His schedule was packed to the brim.

He had quickly moved room to room seeing the patients who were admitted to him. Tonight was not the night he would stay late at the hospital. He had a woman to get to. Matter of fact, he was sure she was still in the lab and he’d probably have to drag her out of it.

“Okay, and what about Mr. Dobeck?”

Kane pulled up the patient’s chart on his tablet and quickly skimmed the recommendation of the cardiologist. He glanced up at the resident who had asked the question.

“Make sure the stress test that Dr. Berber recommended is ordered and that it can be performed in the morning. I want him fully optimized for surgery,” Kane replied. He depended on his colleagues to offer the risk factors for patients before they underwent anesthesia for surgery. Many of the surgeries he performed were lifesaving, but he always wanted to know their risk factor beforehand. This would ensure he would be able to advise them about the surgery they would undergo and they could make an informed decision if it was something they wanted to do.

“Will do.” The resident nodded and took notes on her paper.

Kane quickly scanned the patient list and saw they had reviewed everyone and he had seen the last patient he was obligated to. Tomorrow, his partner, Eric, would be taking over and would cover the patients who were admitted under their service.

“Any other questions?” he asked.

Kane not only enjoyed his job as a surgeon, but he did love the teaching side as well. The residents on this rotation were extremely smart, and he felt confident they had learned a great deal. He stayed with them for a few more moments going over a few of the patients they had seen. They asked good questions, and he took his time making sure they understood what the plan for each patient would be and why he’d made the decisions for the patients. Kane felt that thoroughly explaining issues with his residents would help them grow as physicians.

After bidding them good evening, Kane turned on his heel. He made his way through the hospital, holding his tablet close to him. He headed to his office. He walked through the doors and went over to his new secretary’s desk.

Mya Miranda had been hired two months ago after his former secretary, Angela, retired. It was discovered that Angela had mixed up messages between him and one of the other physicians she’d worked for. The hospital was short-staffed, and most of the doctors shared a secretary.

Poor Angela was being split between three physicians. Dr. Lopez had been the physician who had requested for Angela to not submit his patients for any more researches. He had a small patient population due to being semi-retired and didn’t want to compromise other researches since his were already in certain trials. After the mix-up was discovered, Angela had called it quits while he and the other physicians went to the department heads with the complaints that the secretaries were being stretched too thin.

They had won their argument, and now the secretaries were only shared amongst two physicians. It led to hiring a few extra secretaries, and it would appear the departments were running much smoother.

Kane’s patients were being entered into Kimora’s research.

“Dr. Livingston, I have a message for you,” Mya announced. She smiled at him and reached for a sticky note on her desk and handed it to him.

“Thanks, Mya. Do you need anything before I go?” he asked. He glanced down at the slip of paper and bit back grin.

5 o’clock.

That’s all it said. He didn’t need to ask who had left the message for him. It was obvious it was from Kimora.

“No, I’m good. I have a list of the physicians who will be covering for you while you are away on vacation. You enjoy your time away,” she said with a wide smile.

“Don’t worry, I will.” He tipped his head toward her before moving on to his office. He wasn’t even going to sit. He was still dressed in his white scrubs and lab jacket. He slipped his jacket off and hung it up on the hook behind his door. He moved around his desk and ensured his computer was turned off. It would appear Mya had everything in order. He slipped his tablet inside his attaché bag and hefted the strap onto his shoulder. He peered around his office one last time then walked out of the room. He shut the door and headed off to go make sure he wasn’t late in going to get a certain someone from her office.

He wouldn’t dare be late. He checked his watch and saw he had fifteen minutes. He quickened his pace.

There was no way he was going to be late in starting their vacation.

“Make a note of how the cells look now,” Kimora murmured. She lifted her face from the microscope. She was in the lab today and had made great strides in her work. She glanced over at the clock on the wall and sighed. Two months ago, had she been sitting in this same spot, she may not have even looked at the clock.

Today was different.

She and Kane were taking time away from the hospital. Just thinking of her man had a smile forming on her lips. These past couple of months had been heavenly. Kane was the man of her dreams, and she was so damn lucky. He was supportive in her work, treated her as an equal, and made sure every damn night she was pleased.

It had only been two months, and she was already thinking of selling her house. She spent more time at his than hers. Why did she need to pay a mortgage? But she kept her current feelings inside. She didn’t want to rush the man and force herself on him. Even though he had already cleared out half of his dresser for her and she had clothes hanging in the separate closet that was in his master suite of his home.

“What time are you leaving?” Laura asked. She was typing out notes on the laptop that was seated on the counter in front of her.

“I am leaving at the time I’m supposed to,” Kimora replied haughtily.

Laura gasped and swung around to face her.

“Who are you, ma’am?” Laura questioned dramatically. She rested a hand on her chest and shook her head. “I just don’t know who this woman is in front of me. You don’t stay late at work every night anymore. Weekends are for you, and now you are leaving me to go on a two-week vacation with your man…who are you?”

Kimora chuckled and couldn’t help but think the same. Had anyone told her that she would be cutting back on work and focusing on herself, she would have thought they were crazy.

But everything Laura pointed out was true. She refused to work herself to death. She was going to enjoy life and her new man.

He certainly put in the work to make their relationship succeed. She understood the late nights he had to pull with emergency surgeries and having to work weekends when it was his turn to cover the patients who were admitted to the hospital. But when he had any free time, it was spent with her.

Kimora loved everything about Kane. She had even come to know his younger sister, Lizzie. They had grown to be good friends.

“I’m the woman I always should have been,” Kimora said. She pushed back away from the counter and stood. Any other night, she would have continued on and ignored the clock, but no longer was she doing that. This work would be waiting for her when she returned. Plus she had plenty of staff who she trusted to oversee the project while she was away. There was a team of researchers on this project besides her.

Basically meaning, the work would continue while she was gone.

“Well, we will make sure that everything runs smoothly while you are away. If I need anything?—”

“You can call me,” Kimora said.

“I will find someone else to call,” Laura said.

Kimora laughed at the stubbornness of her friend. Ever since Laura had learned that Kimora was going to start living her life and taking time for herself, Laura had supported the decision.

“Okay, fine. Call someone else. But if the place is going to shit, call me.”

“I still won’t.” Laura shook her head.

Kimora barked a laugh and gave up. Laura would only call her when she deemed it necessary. Plus Kimora wasn’t sure how much of a reception she would get while traipsing around Europe. Kane had planned a wonderful vacation for them, and she was going to enjoy every single moment of it. Laura’s gaze focused on something over Kimora’s shoulder.

Without turning around, she felt that it was Kane. From the way her skin prickled, his eyes were on her. She glanced over her shoulder and saw him standing in the doorway of the lab. Her mouth grew dry at the sight of him still in his white surgical scrubs. His work bag hung from his shoulder. There were slight smudges under his eyes. He had been pulling long hours these last few days. Lucky enough for him, they were officially on vacation as soon as she grabbed her stuff.

“Looks like it’s time for me to go,” she said to Laura.

“Go ahead. I’ll put all of this away.” Laura waved for Kimora to leave.

“Are you sure?” Kimora said. It would take her about five minutes for her to store the samples she had been looking at under the microscope.

“I can do it. Go. Have fun, and don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.” Laura tossed her a wink and waved to Kane.

He gave a nod to Laura, but then his eyes swiveled back to Kimora. She inhaled sharply, again still in disbelief that this man was all hers. She made her way to him and arrived in front of him.

“Are you ready to go?” he asked. He reached out and took her hand in his. He entwined their fingers together.

“You are on time,” she breathed. She glanced over at the clock on the wall and saw he actually had five minutes to spare.

“I was really wanting to get to you,” he murmured low.

The other staff ignored them. It wasn’t a shock to see him in the lab. Kane stopped by often when he got the chance.

“Is that so?” She arched an eyebrow at him. Her stomach clenched at the sight of his eyes darkening. She already knew why he wanted to get to her. It had been a few days since they had been intimate with each other as he’d been working crazy hours.

“Yes, Dr. Tucker. We are officially on vacation, or have you forgotten?”

“No, I haven’t forgotten.” Kimora smiled and led him out of the lab.

They walked down the hallway toward her office in silence while holding hands. She had been looking forward to this day. This vacation was much needed for the both of them. They arrived in her office where she shut the door. Kane immediately corralled her up against the door while allowing his bag to slip to the floor.

He bent down and captured her lips with his in a deep, passionate kiss that took Kimora’s breath away. Her arms came to settle on his broad shoulders while his tongue swept inside her mouth. She bit back a whimper and pressed closer to him. Her body burned for him.

Kane lifted his head and broke the kiss. It was over way too fast.

“Get your stuff so we can go,” Kane growled.

Kimora grinned and pushed him away from her. She took off her lab jacket and tossed it over the back of her office chair. She grabbed her purse and work bag which was already packed and waiting. She spun around and raced back over to Kane. She slipped her hand into his and grinned.

“I’m ready, my love.” He leaned down and pressed a hard kiss to her lips.

“Let’s go, baby.”
