Chapter 29

Chapter

Twenty-Nine

Talant

I awoke to an empty bed, reaching for Minerva. My heart raced and sweat broke out on my skin. She was in danger. I knew it. And she wasn’t here.

Leaping to my feet, I ran into the bathroom and the closet, looking for her. I didn’t waste time using the stairs, just portaled straight into the kitchen. The tea kettle was still warm. Minerva must have made tea, but there was no cup or tea pot in the kitchen. I moved through the sunroom, spying the pot sitting on the table on the back porch. I tore through the back door and saw the broken pieces of a teacup on the boards.

Minerva’s scent still hung in the air, as well as the scent of a man, one I didn’t recognize. I could feel the remnants of his magic lingering. His power was black as night and tinged with my brother’s magic. A warlock, one who had siphoned power from Davian. He hadn’t been there the night we rescued my brother, but he was part of the coven.

Anger filled me, and my skin heated. The world took on a red haze and flickered. Those fuckers took my woman. My other half.

I would kill every last one of them. I knew I hadn’t gotten them all when I freed my brother, but I never imagined they would be stupid enough to track us down. Minerva and I wouldn’t have to worry about them again after today because I would decimate them. It would be like they never existed at all.

Since the moment I ingested her blood, I was able to track her movements. I could feel her. And once I’d given her my blood, the connection had only become stronger. Despite what I told her when we exchanged, I should have been able to sense her location with ease, even feel some of her emotions. Though our blood bond was still tenuous, it was there. But when I reached out to her, there was nothing.

Panic rose within me. She wasn’t dead. I would have felt it if she died. So, why couldn’t I sense her? I’d been aware of her and exactly how far away she was from me all day yesterday. I’d even sensed her annoyance yesterday when she’d been dealing with the gossipy witches from her coven. And her confusion about me. That was why I let her have time and distance away from me and why I’d resisted the urge to follow her yesterday.

Again, I didn’t bother to run. I portaled straight into Davian’s room, appearing next to his bed. My brother was on his feet, ready to strike, within a moment. He halted when he saw me.

“They took Minerva,” I growled.

“Who?”

“The fucking warlocks who drained your power.”

Electricity crackled in the air at my words, but my brother tamped down on his power. Once I’d freed him and returned with him to Minerva’s home, I’d fed him my blood, helping to restore his magic. He wasn’t as strong as he once was. But he was strong enough to help me take on a few rogue warlocks.

“Where are they?” Davian asked as he threw on a pair of pants and a shirt.

I shook my head.

“I don’t know,” I answered.

“I thought you’d shared blood with the witch.”

I fisted my hands in my hair as I paced around his room. “I did. I’ve been able to feel her ever since. Except for now. There’s nothing there, but she’s not dead. It’s like someone has hidden her from me.”

“We’ll find her,” Davian assured me.

I wanted to scream. To tear something or someone apart. To burn their remains to ash.

I would relish every moment.
