EPILOGUE
Rachel
A s I’m unloading the last box into my brand-new office, there are a couple of knocks on the door.
I look behind me, unable to stop smiling, when I see Matt standing there.
He looks good in a navy blue polo shirt with Penn State on the breast pocket and one of his hands tucked into the front pocket of his khakis. He looks professional—older than his twenty-three with some slight scruff on his jaw that doesn’t make him look as baby-faced.
“I said if I’m ever in town, I’d stop by…” He says with a half-grin on his face, holding up a pair of car keys. “So, how about I take you to lunch?”
I drop everything I’m doing and walk over to the boy who I’ve slowly fallen in love with over the past few years.
I plant the softest kiss on his lips. “I’d love that,” I tell him honestly.
It’s been a long summer away from one another, even though we’ve talked every day. He found a place not too far from Penn State or my apartment and moved in about a week ago. Brie and Ryan met him within two days, hounding him with inappropriate questions that made me blush and Matt laugh.
One day, I’m sure he’ll meet my father.
When we’re ready.
Until then… “I know a place with really good Philly cheesesteaks,” I tell him, knowing they’re his favorite.
He kisses me again. “You read my mind, Ruby Red.”
When we walk out of my office, we do it holding hands.
I don’t look over my shoulder as if somebody can see me, scared of the repercussions.
We sit together at the restaurant.
We laugh.
And we plan our next official date.
