Four hours later, Brina woke up lying on her back, with Ronny, lying on his side, staring at her. She was pleased to realize her nakedness was still completely covered and that she was met, not by the face of a man ready to get rid of her, but a smiling face. Which made her smile, too, and she felt that warmth inside she always felt around him. “Hey,” she said and laid on her side facing him.
Ronny had awakened nearly an hour earlier and was fascinated to see how peaceful she was sleeping. In the midst of the storm, she was at peace. He realized how important that was to him. He was beginning to realize how much she mattered to him. “How do you feel?” he asked her.
“Much, much better. I slept so well.”
“Yes, you did, I’m pleased to say.”
“You sound like you’ve been awake for a minute.”
“About an hour.”
“Doing what?”
Ronny smiled. “Staring at your angelic face.”
Brina grinned. “That sounds like something a stalker would say.”
“Then sign me up,” Ronny said, and she laughed. He loved her throaty laugh. “I’m just glad you were able to get some rest, that’s all,” he added.
She agreed. “So am I.” But she continued staring at him.
“What?” he asked with a smile.
“How old are you?”
“That’s the question on your mind?”
Brina continued to stare at him.
“How old do I look?”
“I don’t know. Fiftyish?”
Ronny looked at her with horror. “ Fiftyish ? Really?”
He expected her to smile and say she was kidding, but she didn’t smile. She didn’t say a word.
Ronny was astounded. He already was over a decade older than her. But she was figuring he was two decades older? “I’m forty-four,” he said.
And it was then that Brina smiled. “I knew that already. Just wanted to see your reaction.”
Ronny laughed. “How did you know my age?”
“When I first started working here, one of the maids was saying how the big boss looked good for his age. I asked how old was he, and she told me. She probably Googled you.”
Or Elvira told her, Ronny thought. There was nothing that woman would not do for her staff. She was loyal to them to a fault, and they didn’t even seem to appreciate it. but Ronny was still curious about one thing. “If you already knew my age, why did you ask me?”
“I’ve known many guys who lied about it. I wanted to see if you would too. But my main reason,” she added, “is because I don’t understand why a good guy like you aren’t married with children at your age?”
“Ah.” It was a fair question, Ronny knew, but that word always got his hackles up. “I take it you want to be married with children?”
“Right now? With my life the way it is? No way!” Eventually she did want to be married with children, but that wasn’t something she was discussing with him.
Ronny was surprised by her answer. Every woman he’d ever known would broach the subject and then inject herself into the predicate. “I’m like you. With my life the way it is, I just haven’t found the time.”
“But it’s something you want?”
“Not particularly no.” Then he looked at her. “That bothers you?”
Brina smiled. “Why would it bother me? That’s your life.”
She never took the bait. He liked that. “True,” he said with a smile of his own.
Brina yawned and stretched. “What time is it, by the way?” she asked.
“Last I looked, and I recently looked, it was a few minutes shy of three a.m., so it should be a little after three.”
“Wow.That early?”
“Yup.”
She stared at him. “How do you feel, sir? You okay?”
Ronny could see the concern in her eyes, which touched him. “If you’re okay, I’m okay.”
Brina smiled. It was the sweetest thing ever. But she kept her composure. She knew she wasn’t in some billionaire’s league. She knew they weren’t about to live happily ever after, she didn’t care how great it could be. It wasn’t going to be, and she would never convince herself otherwise. He was just a good guy doing good things for her. And she appreciated it. “I want to properly thank you, sir, for rescuing me from that crazy man.”
“You know what you aren’t going to do?”
It was an odd question to Brina. “What, sir?”
“Call me sir while you’re lying in bed with me,” he said, and they both laughed. “Or any other time going forward,” he added. “I’m Ronny or Ronald. Either will do.”
“Not Warren?” Brina asked since it was his actual first name.
“Never Warren,” he said.
“You dislike the name that badly?”
“No, not at all,” said Ronny. “But Warren was my father’s name. I’m not my father. He was a great man.”
Brina considered him. “Aren’t you a great man too?”
He shook his head. “No. Not in the least. I’m a rich man. I’m a powerful man. But greatness is born out of how other people perceive you. My brother Sully, now he’s a great man. But me? On that score, I fail miserably.”
“You didn’t fail me,” said Brina. “And I thank you for that, sir. I mean Ronny.”
He smiled. “It’ll take some getting used to, but you’ll get used to it. And don’t worry about that guy that broke into your apartment. I have the chief of security at Bradshaw Tech on the case. He and his team will find him.”
“I’ll feel so much better when that happens for sure.”
“And you don’t think you’ve ever met him before?”
She was shaking her head. “Never. I’ve never seen that man before in my life.”
“Did he tell you what his intentions were?”
She shook her head again. “He didn’t tell me anything. He was trying to drug me. I know that.”
“He wanted you unconscious so that he could take you to another location. He didn’t expect you to put up such a fight or he would have probably been better prepared.”
“That’s what I was thinking too.”
“And whoever sent him,” Ronny continued, “told him not to harm you.”
Brina considered that response. “Why would you say that?”
“He had a gun. He didn’t use it.”
“But why would he want to take me to another location anyway?”
“It suggests you may have something they want, or you may know something they need to know. Or they may have wanted to use you for ransom.”
“Ransom? Me ?” She smiled. “He must be insane. There’s nobody on the face of this earth that’s going to pay a ransom for me, is he kidding?” She was smiling and shaking her head. “That can’t be it.”
But she noticed that Ronny wasn’t smiling at all, as if that most definitely could be it. “You actually think that’s a possibility?” she asked him, unable to shield her skepticism.
“I don’t know for certain, but it’s not as far-fetched an idea as you think.”
“But there’s literally no one that would pay a ransom for me, sir. I mean Ronny.”
Ronny stared at her. “No one,” he said, “except me.”
Brina’s heart squeezed when he said those words. It was sweetness to her ears. And although she still doubted that that could be the motive, the fact that Ronny would have stepped up for her had it been the motive meant the world to her. “Thanks,” she said, and leaned over and gave him a friendly kiss on the cheek.
But when she went to move back from him, he pulled her back to him, wrapped her in his arms, and kissed her on the lips. Only his kiss wasn’t chaste and wasn’t meant to be friendly. The fact that he hadn’t touched her didn’t negate the fact that he desperately wanted to, that he desperately needed to, and his passionate kiss represented that need.
They kissed with that sense of all-consuming fire. And then Ronny moved down, to her breasts, to her stomach, and then to her womanhood. It had been years since Brina felt a man’s touch that totally, and it felt beyond good to her.
And when he moved back up, and looked into her eyes, he knew she was ready. He hugged her again and spoke in her ear. “I have no children because I have never had unprotected sex in my life. But with you?”
There was a plea in his voice. And Brina believed his plea. And when she nodded her consent, his breath caught because he wanted it so badly, and he entered her with such a gentle, caring thrust that it made both of them gasp in anticipation.
The further in he went, the fuller it felt to Brina. And the fuller it felt to her, the tighter she felt to him. And they fell into a rhythm. Stroking and moving in unison. And not just for a few minutes, but for well past half an hour. They moaned and groaned and couldn’t stop the feelings. Sweat poured from both of them as they kept moving, kept moaning, kept stroking. They couldn’t stop the feelings because they didn’t want to stop them. Until they were overwhelmed with those feelings. And then they came.
Even that was a slow, sweet, hard, wonderful burn. It was orgasm after orgasm. Rolling orgasms for both of them. Until they were running on empty.
And even then, as he slid off of her, he moved her on top of him at the same time. He pulled her into his arms, still inside of her, until they both fell asleep once again.
