Chapter 22

Audrey

T he game of truth or dare had gone on late into the night. So late, in fact, I’d considered staying in bed all day. Soren pulled me out, though, claiming if he didn’t eat, he was going to die. Given how much he was always eating, I believed him. How he didn’t put on any weight was beyond my understanding. Men and their metabolisms were plainly unfair.

After breakfast, we had gone for a walk around the buildings, getting some fresh air to help clear the last of my headache. It had been a lovely way to spend the morning. Soren talked a little about his home and his brothers, and I told him about my friends from college. He hadn’t asked about my parents, which I appreciated, it wasn’t the sort of day to ruin with crying. I also wasn’t ready to talk about them with the boys yet.

I felt differently about my new coven-mates this morning. I hadn’t been brainwashed or anything, but I felt calmer when I was around the boys, like a part of my mind recognized them as a safe place. Henri warned me coven bonds could become emotional, and that when the bond grew stronger, not only would I be able to use their powers, but I would be able to sense what they were feeling.

Since I was doing better, there was no point in calling out for the rest of the day. I was already behind in my classes as it was. Caius reminded me there would be more training when I wasn’t in class, so I planned to spend the rest of my morning surrounded by plants before I had to deal with whatever hell he was going to put me through.

Ewan had a shapeshifting class, so offered to walk me to the greenhouses. Things weren’t as strained between us, but they were still a little awkward. Something was in the air between us, and I wasn’t sure what. It was like an elephant of tension, but I didn’t know how to get rid of it.

The greenhouses had just come into view when my vision went white. The same white as during my Showing. Only this time, the voice which called to me was so much closer. So close, in fact, the woman it belonged to stepped out of the light and stood in front of me.

She was beautiful. The most beautiful woman I’d ever seen. There was an ethereal quality about her that models would kill for. Long dark hair fell like silk down her back. Eyes so impossibly blue they couldn’t be real. A crown of starlight and flowers rested on her head, and she smiled at me.

“Audrey St. John, Daughter of Avalon. I have waited so long to meet you. Fate has kept us apart, but now we can be together. Let me show you around.” Her voice was like a song, beautiful and melodic. It must be how angels sounded. She reached out for me, and I stepped forward, welcoming her touch. She had to have the answers I needed, she had to know what was happening to me.

As her hand touched my arm, the world turned cold. White faded to gray stone, surrounding me on all sides. She was outside, bars stood between us. Confusion washed over me, and I didn’t know what to do. She was still smiling, like nothing was wrong, and everything was going according to her wishes.

“You are going to spend some time here. I have plans for you, descendant of mine. I will see you soon.” With a wink, she was gone, and I was alone.

What the fuck was I going to do?
