TWENTY-SEVEN

HAVEN

“ I will never tire of watching you come undone on my cock,” he murmured, pressing a tender kiss to the top of my head.

I smiled against his chest, my body still humming with satisfaction. “Nor I feeling you inside me,” I purred, tilting my head to kiss his still-racing heart softly. “You fill me so perfectly.”

His hand drifted down my back, his fingers tracing the curve of my spine before coming to rest on the swell of my hip. “You were made for me,” he rumbled, his voice low and rough with satisfaction. “Every inch of you fits me like a glove.”

I shivered at his possessive words. A fresh wave of desire washed over me despite my satiated state. Kai had this effect on me—no matter how many times he brought me to the heights of ecstasy, I always craved more. It was like nothing I had ever experienced.

His fingers flexed on my hip, digging into my soft flesh. “I want to keep you in this bed forever,” he growled. “Spend days worshiping this beautiful body until you forget everything but my name.”

I lifted my head to meet his heated gaze. My core immediately clenched at the undisguised hunger in his dark eyes.

"Then why don't you?" I breathed, my voice a husky purr. "I'm yours, Kai. Body and soul. Do with me as you please."

A low groan rumbled in his chest. In one swift motion, he flipped us over so I was pinned beneath his hard, muscular body. "Careful what you wish for, my love," he warned, his eyes glinting with untamed desire. "If I had my way, I’d tie you to my bed and never let you leave."

“I fail to see the downside,” I quipped breathlessly, arching up to press my naked body flush against his.

Kai's answering growl vibrated against my lips as he captured my mouth in a searing kiss. His tongue delved deep, claiming me, consuming me. I moaned into the kiss, my hands fisting in his thick, silky hair.

He nipped at my lower lip before trailing hot, open-mouthed kisses along my jaw and down the column of my throat. I tilted my head back with a breathy moan, giving him better access. His teeth grazed over my racing pulse before his tongue soothed the slight sting.

“You drive me wild,” Kai rasped against my flushed skin. “I can never get enough of you.”

His large hands skimmed down my sides, caressing each dip and curve. Calloused fingers trailed over my quivering stomach before dipping between my thighs. I cried out, my back bowing off the bed as he stroked me with knowing fingers.

“Always so responsive," he praised huskily. “So eager for my touch.”

“Only for you,” I panted, my hips rocking wantonly against his hand.

The sound of harsh knocks on the door jolted us from our lust-filled haze. Kai’s head snapped up, his body tensing protectively over mine.

“Ignore it,” I breathed, my body thrumming with need. “Don’t stop.”

A voice called out from the other side.

“Kai? Are you in there?”

“Who the fuck is that?” I whispered.

The knocking grew more insistent, echoing loudly through the room. Kai cursed under his breath, reluctantly rolling off of me. He snatched his discarded pants from the floor and yanked them on with jerky motions.

I sat up, clutching the rumpled sheet to my bare chest. My gaze flicked to Gerald’s lifeless body sprawled in a pool of congealing blood. Cold dread seeped into my bones.

I killed someone.

I actually took someone’s life.

Not someone innocent, but still a human’s life.

I watched him go, my heart hammering against my ribs. My fists clenched the sheet so tightly my knuckles had turned white. I could hear the low murmur of voices from the other room, but I couldn't make out the words over the roaring of blood in my ears.

He cracked it open, keeping his body blocking the view into the room.

“What is it?” he bit out, his voice tight with barely restrained irritation.

“I've been texting you,” the voice on the other side replied, tinged with exasperation. “Figured you needed a clean-up crew since you weren’t answering.”

Kai's jaw clenched. He glanced back at me briefly, his dark eyes unreadable, before turning back to the door. “Give me a minute.”

He shut the door firmly and stalked over to where I sat frozen on the bed, still clutching the sheet to my naked body. Bending down, he scooped up my dress from the floor and tossed it to me.

“Get dressed,” he ordered brusquely.

I stared at him dumbly for a moment before shaking myself into action. With trembling hands, I pulled the bloodstained dress over my head. The fabric clung to my skin, still damp with sweat and other fluids.

Kai was already fully dressed, looking as put together as ever despite our frenzied coupling just minutes before.

The high of the kill and our manic lovemaking was fading, replaced by a creeping sense of dread.

Kai crouched down in front of me, his dark eyes searching my face. “Haven. Look at me.”

I forced myself to meet his intense gaze, swallowing hard. “Kai, I…I killed him. I actually killed someone,” my voice wavered.

He gripped my shoulders, his touch grounding me. “You did what you had to do. That bastard was going to murder you. He deserved what he got.”

I shook my head, nausea churning in my gut as I glanced at Gerald's corpse. “But I…I enjoyed it.”

Kai's lips curved into a wicked smile. "Of course you did. There's nothing like the rush of taking a life, especially when they deserve it." His fingers trailed along my jaw, tipping my chin up to meet his heated gaze. “It's intoxicating. The power, the control.”

I shivered under his touch, equally thrilled and terrified by the dark hunger in his eyes that mirrored my own. “What does that make me, Kai? Am I…am I a monster?” I whispered, voicing my deepest fear.

He shook his head firmly. “No, Haven. You're a survivor. A fighter. You did what you had to do to protect yourself.” His thumb brushed over my lower lip. “Never be ashamed of that.”

He pressed a soft kiss to my forehead before rising to his feet. “One of my boys from The Brotherhood is here. His name is Theo. I want you to meet him if you’re okay with that.”

“Does he know who I am?”

“He does.”

“Okay, then.”

Kai crossed to the door and opened it fully, revealing a man I had seen before. He had dark hair that was longer on top and light green eyes. He was tall and muscular like Kai. I could see tattoos peeking up from the hem of his suit, but I couldn’t begin to make out what they might be. His eyes widened slightly as he took in the grisly scene.

Theo stepped inside, followed by multiple men wearing janitorial uniforms that mirrored the venue’s logo. Their faces were stern and expressionless. They filed into the room without a word, moving to deal with Gerald’s corpse with a chilling efficiency that spoke of ample experience. I felt a bit of panic building, but then the leader of the janitorial looking men, a bald man with a permanent scowl and a thick scar running across his cheek, broke the awkward silence.

“Quite a mess you’ve made here,” he commented mildly as if discussing the weather.

Kai grunted. “It’s nothing you can’t handle, Ivan. But this was all her,” he turned to look at me. His face held an expression of pride that I hadn’t expected. It was like when you drew a picture for your mom, and it looked like a blob, but she looked at you like you were the most remarkable thing she’d ever seen. Except hidden in his expression of pride was something primal.

“Impressive,” Theo remarked, assessing my handiwork. “It’s nice to meet you finally, Haven.”

I scrambled off the bed awkwardly and moved to introduce myself. I walked over to Theo, feeling strangely exposed and vulnerable despite being fully clothed. The metallic scent of blood clung to my skin, a tangible reminder of what I had done. I held out my hand, trying to keep it from trembling. “Nice to meet you too. I wish it were under better circumstances.”

Theo took my hand firmly, his green eyes assessing me intently. He seemed wholly unfazed by the dried blood. There was no judgment in his gaze, only a glimmer of respect and perhaps a touch of wariness. “In our line of work, there rarely are better circumstances.” His eyes flicked to Kai as he released my hand. “I’m just glad this asshole found someone who can handle his brand of crazy.”

I glanced at Kai, a flush creeping up my neck at the thought of him discussing me with his men. He met my gaze steadily, and a slight smirk played at the corner of his mouth.

Theo turned his attention back to the clean-up crew efficiently disposing of Gerald’s body. “They’ll make sure there’s no trace left. It’ll be like it never happened. I figured you two would need a ride.”

“Thank you.” I nodded.

Kai kept a firm arm around my waist as he guided me to the door. Theo led us out a back entrance to a waiting black SUV with tinted windows. He opened the rear door, ushering us inside before slipping into the front passenger seat himself. The driver, a burly man with a shaved head and a beard, barely glanced at us as he pulled away from the curb.

The ride back was quiet, but my mind was anything but. The adrenaline was wearing off, and reality was setting in. I had just killed a man. Brutally. And I enjoyed it. What did that say about me?

Kai's hand rested possessively on my thigh, his thumb stroking soothing circles on my skin through the fabric of my dress. It was a small comfort, but it helped ground me. He didn't seem bothered in the least by what had transpired. If anything, he seemed…proud. Like my capacity for violence only made him want me more.

We arrived at my apartment, and Theo and the driver remained in the SUV as Kai walked me to my door. I fumbled with my keys, my hands still shaking from the events of the night. Kai gently took them from me and unlocked the door, ushering me inside.

When the door closed behind us, I turned to face him, my eyes searching his. “Kai, what happens now? I mean, we just left a dead body back there. What if…”

He silenced me with a finger to my lips. “Shh, it's taken care of. You don't need to worry about anything.” His dark eyes bore into mine intently. “Do you trust me, Haven?”

I swallowed hard and nodded. “Yes. I trust you.”

A ghost of a smile played on his lips. “Good. Then trust that I'll always protect you, no matter what.”

He cupped my face in his large hands, his thumbs brushing over my cheekbones tenderly. The contrast of his gentle touch with the violence we had just committed was jarring. But that was Kai—a walking contradiction. Brutal yet tender, dangerous yet protective.

I leaned into his touch, my eyes fluttering closed. “I don't regret it,” I whispered. “Killing him. After what he tried to do to me, what he wanted to do…I'd do it again in a heartbeat.”

“I know,” Kai murmured. “That's my girl. My beautiful, deadly queen.”

He captured my lips in a searing kiss, swallowing my gasp. I melted against him, my hands fisting in his shirt as I pulled him closer. His tongue delved into my mouth, stroking and exploring possessively. I yielded to his dominance, a soft moan escaping me as he backed me against the wall. His hard body pinned me in place, the evidence of his arousal pressing insistently against my stomach.

He broke the kiss to trail his lips down my throat, his teeth nipping at my sensitive skin. “I want you,” he growled against my racing pulse. “I always want you.”

I was going to respond, but his phone started ringing. He ignored it, but then it started ringing again. “I’m sorry,” he apologized and answered.

“Yeah? I’ll be down in a second,” he sighed as he hung up. “That was Theo. Archer has called an emergency meeting.”

“Is everything okay?”

“I don’t know. He only calls emergency meetings if something is wrong. I’ll call you when we’re done.”

“Okay. Be careful,” I murmured. I was reluctant to let him go, but I knew he had to leave.

He pressed one last hard kiss to my lips before stepping back. “Lock the door behind me.”

I nodded and watched as he slipped out the door, waiting until I heard his footsteps fade before engaging the deadbolt with a soft click.

Alone in my apartment, the events of the night crashed over me like a tidal wave. I slid down the door, hugging my knees to my chest as silent sobs wracked my body. The tears I had held back all evening finally broke free, streaming down my face in hot rivulets.

I killed a man tonight. Brutally, savagely, and without an ounce of remorse.
