Fallon
T eddy is waiting for me outside of the elevator.
Snagging my wrist, he pulls me out before the doors have even fully opened. He’s almost vibrating with excitement as he throws his arms around me.
“Did you – you did !”
I start laughing as his face buries in my neck. “God, you and Fox together smell phenomenal .”
He backs off, a sheepish look crossing his face. “Sorry. I’m really pleased for you.”
“Thank you,” I say teasingly. “But I’m ready to work.”
I’m not starting with the Editorial department for a few days yet, so I’m going to help Teddy while they start the search for a full-time replacement.
He gives me a pleading look. “The manuscripts, Fallon. They’re watching me .”
I stifle my laugh as I follow him to his office, stopping in the doorway. “Wow.”
I forgot how many there were. And most of them have been shoved into a big pile of papers, all mixed in together.
“I’m so sorry.” Teddy buries his face in his hands dramatically. “They attacked me. And I feel really bad, because each manuscript deserves to be reviewed, you know? But it just got a bit too much.”
“It’s okay.” I start rolling up the sleeves of my blazer. I feel much more comfortable here now that I’m dressed more appropriately. My navy blazer covers a cute little blue and white-striped blouse, my cropped trousers a dark gray with functional but still pretty navy shoes. “I’ll make a start here. Do you have calls to make?”
Teddy waves his hand. “I can take them in the big meeting room. Are you sure?”
“Yes.” I’m already kneeling, pulling one of the smaller stacks toward me. “Go on. I’ll see you soon.”
“Thank you,” he breathes earnestly. “You’re my hero, Fallon.”
I’m engrossed in a page when the phone at the desk behind me begins to ring.
“Did you order something?” I pop my head around the meeting room door. “It’s on the way up.”
Teddy scratches his cheek. “Honestly… very possibly, and I just forgot.”
But when the elevator opens, we both stop to stare.
Two delivery workers stagger out, each of them carrying a massive bouquet of flowers. “Fallon and Teddy?”
We exchange glances. Teddy is grinning. “Yep. That’s us.”
He squeals as they leave, already darting to my desk. I follow him more slowly, my heart thumping as Teddy points to one of the bouquets. His eyes are scanning a small written card. “That one’s yours. Holy shit, Fallon. That must have been some freaking knot.”
I blush, but I’m grinning as I flip open my own card.
Mate,
Until next time.
Such a good girl for me.
Fox
God. I swallow, trying to succinctly press my legs together. But Teddy cackles, and I have to join him, my hand over my mouth as I take in what he’s holding up.
He wipes at his eyes before waving the silver handcuffs at me. “The note says they’re for next time we get in trouble.”
I pull out my phone.
Thank you for the flowers. They’re beautiful, Fox.
He’s typing.
You’re welcome. Not as beautiful as my mate.
“Damn,” Teddy breathes, peering over my shoulder. “He’s good.”
He really is.
