Fallon

R owan glances at me. We’re huddled together, staring at his screen.

“Wow,” I breathe. “Rowan, this is…,”

He shrugs. “It wasn’t too hard to find. The accounts information was harder, obviously. More finding patterns of behavior than contact information. But this is the number for the lawyer.”

I take the card he gives me, curling it in my hand before I press my lips to his. “Thank you. I mean it.”

My stomach flips. My dad’s lawyer. The man who handled his will.

The man who can explain exactly what happened to all his money. To his legacy.

Although Rowan has pieced together a huge amount. Including some interesting information about Ellis, Shaun and Rory.

“Fallon,” Rory says softly. My gaze jerks to him “It’s your decision. Nobody else’s.”

Slowly, I nod, and he jerks his head toward the door with an understanding smile. “Go on. You have a big day ahead. And have fun.”

My smile grows. “I intend to.”

I blow him a kiss before I grab my laptop and dash from the room. Nobody is walking with me today, although Fox wanted to. Everyone wanted to.

I scan my employee ID at the entrance to the elevator and walk in, nodding to someone else who gets in with me.

My excitement only grows as the floors rise.

I step out alone, taking a moment to look around. To breathe it all in.

I don’t intend to waste a minute of my time on this floor. Not a single minute.

My new boss’s door is closed. Heart in my mouth, I tug the collar of my shirt into place and knock on the door.

I feel like an editor, in my crisp white shirt and fitted brown trousers. My hair is pulled up into a sleek ponytail, a few strands left free and my face neural. Laptop under my arm. My bag is filled with books and pens and notepads.

I feel like one. And Ed Burrows is the man who’s going to make sure I become a damn good one.

Emotion tightens my throat as the door swings open and he grins at me, holding out his hand. “Fallon Matthews. I’m so pleased you’re joining us.”

My handshake is firm.

“Not nearly as glad as I am.”

“Come on in.” Ed steps back, revealing a meeting table with a handful of others. “We’ll introduce you, get you set up. Busy day, I’m afraid.”

My smile feels as though my face is too small to hold it. “I don’t mind that at all.”

Ed gives me a considering look as he waves me to a seat and points to the coffee pot. “For once, I actually believe it. Want to introduce yourself, or should I?”

“I’ll do it.” I turn to my new colleagues.

“Hi,” I wave awkwardly, my heart feeling fit to burst. “My name is Fallon Matthews, and… and I’m the new Acquisitions intern.”
