CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Tessa
For a moment, I am frozen in place.
And then I feel the heat of Link’s gaze on me.
With two fingers, he beckons me and mouths the words, “Come to us.”
He’s both encouraging and commanding.
Drawing strength from him, I shove aside my sudden fears and doubts to take my first steps down the aisle toward him. Them.
Even though I thought the hotel staff had set up too many chairs, we have enough guests to fill the room.
Of course, I know almost none of the people who are looking at me.
As I near the front, I miss a step.
Marge is there, snapping pictures with her phone. She lowers the device to smile at me.
Link thought to invite her as well?
Instinctively I look to him, and my heart melts a little.
Even though Link has run roughshod over me, my almost husband has done everything he possibly can to make the experience as wonderful as possible for me.
I continue on, seeing Natalie and David in the first row. On the other side is Lorenzo next to a beautiful woman. His wife, I guess.
Outside the plate-glass window, sunset has painted the sky a stunning mixture of pinks and purples.
As I near the devastatingly handsome men, the world fades away, and I no longer hear the music.
Instead of waiting for me, Pax strides toward me. In his tailored tuxedo jacket, he seems broader than ever.
“Tessa…” He smiles down at me. Then he offers his arm.
Grateful, I tuck mine inside of his.
When we reach Link, Pax surprises me by staying next to me instead of moving to stand in the traditional best-man position.
Both men are standing protectively by my side.
Link leans forward and brushes his lips against mine.
Reverend Clara laughs softly. “I’m afraid you’ve got the order of service wrong.”
“No.” Link shakes his head. “I’ve got it exactly right, Reverend.”
Our guests laugh, and my tension shatters.
“You’re welcome to be seated,” Reverend Clara tells our guests.
Moments later, she begins the ceremony. “Thank you for joining us to celebrate the future and union of Tessa, Link, and Pax.”
I’m stunned that they’re bold in this pronouncement that we are a triad.
“They’d like to thank you for being here to witness and share in one of the greatest moments of their lives. Marriage is a bond based on trust, respect, and mutual support and the blending of lives into a shared path. As they embark on this journey together, we are gathered to offer them our encouragement and support.”
After looking at all of us, she continues. “I will ask the three of you, as you stand before your friends and associates, to declare your commitment to one another. Your promises are a reflection of the life you will build together.”
We form a semicircle.
“Link?” the reverend prompts.
“Tessa, I pledge my life to you. I stand here with you, at your side, because fate has woven our paths together. What began as a necessity has turned into something more. I vow to protect you. My strength is yours to rely on. I pledge my loyalty.”
For a man who was rumored to have dated half the women in the world, his promise surprises me.
Realizing he’s still speaking, I shake my head to bring myself back to the present.
“Together we are stronger, and today I promise to uphold our bond, no matter what may come.”
The words aren’t meant to be ominous, I’m sure, but a shiver goes through me.
Reverend Clara looks to Pax.
He takes my hand in his much bigger, stronger one. “We didn’t begin this journey the way others do, but that makes it no less meaningful. I will stand as your protector and keep you safe in ways seen and unseen. My commitment is to your well-being and to the future we will create together. I will watch over you, fight for you, and be the calm in whatever storm we face. Today I pledge my life to you.”
I’m breathless, lost in the vows these men have created.
It’s my turn, and Pax offers a reassuring smile.
Link lifts his hand, palm up.
I slide mine against his.
Then Pax closes his hand on top. The three of us are bound together.
“Link, Pax, I never imagined I’d be here with you like this.” My voice falters, and they both offer their support.
After a small exhalation, I manage to continue. “I promise to stand with you both. I will respect and honor you always.”
“Do you have Tessa’s ring?” the minister asks.
Pax pulls out a massive oval cut diamond ring from inside his jacket.
I gasp as he hands it over to Link.
I knew he wouldn’t settle for a plain band, but this is over the top,
“The wedding ring is an unbroken circle with no beginning, no end,” she goes on, “representing your eternal commitment to one another. Link, repeat after me…”
A few moments later, he takes my hand and looks me in the eye. “I give you this ring as a symbol of my commitment.”
This stunning gem sparkles in the light as he slides it onto my finger. I can’t help but stare at its magnificence.
It seems to weigh a ton, much like the obligations we’ve just made to each other.
Pax offers me a ring to slip on to Link’s finger, and I follow the officiant’s lead. “Link, I give you this ring as a symbol of my commitment to you.”
Then Link gives me a band for Pax and I repeat my vow to him.
Reverend Clara smiles. “I now pronounce the three of you partners in life.”
My world seems to tip off balance.
“You may now kiss the bride.”
But Link has already moved in, and the buzzing in my head drowns out her words.
No way is he waiting for an invitation to claim what is his in the eyes of the law…
