Chapter Five
MADISON
I sit in my chair shocked, scared, hurt, but most of all, worried. Jonah has never had a temper and I’ve never seen him lash out like this. He was never a pushover or anything, but he wasn’t one to display the kind of anger I just witnessed. Cara hands me a few Kleenexes and I’m hesitant to take them. The woman just offered to kill me, like it was an errand or something.
When I don’t take them, Cara sighs. “Sorry for what I said to you. Thor is my best friend and he’s hurting. I won’t lie to you and say I didn’t mean it because I did. But my threat wasn’t warranted because this whole thing is a misunderstanding.”
I sit there, mouth hanging open and completely speechless. Did she just say she would in fact kill someone for Jonah? I expected the men around here to be savages but not the women. Reluctantly, I take the Kleenex and dab my eyes.
Thinking over everything I just learned, it seems this whole situation isn’t black and white. I don’t want to fall into the trap of Jonah again, but it seems he’s believed a different story of how things went down that night. I’m going to keep my guard up though. I can’t say I have an ounce of trust in Jonah.
A man comes walking into the office and heads straight for Cara. “What’s going on, hellcat? Thor just stormed out of here like the hounds of hell were after him.”
“Babe, it’s not my story to tell. I want to introduce you to someone. Viper, this is Madison. She’s an old friend of Thor’s. Madison, this is my husband and Ol’ Man Viper.”
I didn’t make it that far in my research of MCs, so I have no clue what all this Ol’ Man business means, but I reach my hand out to shake his when he offers. These guys are kind of shocking my system at how respectful they are. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve seen a few things that didn’t shock me when I arrived, but they aren’t at all what I was expecting.
“Nice to meet you,” Viper says with a nod.
“Madison, you might want to give Thor a few days. He’s probably spiraling from what he just learned. Do you have a hotel, or do you need a place to stay?” Cara asks.
Again, they throw another curve ball at me. The concern and care I see in her eyes contradicts my first impression of her. She was ready to put me in the ground and now she’s offering me a place to stay.
“No, I have a motel.”
I don’t go into detail because I don’t want them knowing where to find me. I’m not completely sold on them just yet. There’s something inside me that’s telling me they’re being genuine, but last time I was too trusting, I ended being stalked by a deranged man.
“Okay. Are you protected at all?”
“What do you mean?” I ask her. Clearly I’m not or I wouldn’t be here.
“Like a weapon.”
My mouth drops open and I shake my head furiously. I could never use a gun. I know in this day and age a lot of women have guns, but I can’t see myself ever using one. I save lives, not take them. Cara pulls out her phone and shoots off a text, and we sit in silence for a few minutes until someone else joins us in the office.
A blond, around the same height as me, walks in and tries handing what looks like a stun gun to me. “Hi, I’m Sara. I’m Cara’s sister,” she says, while still holding the gun out to me. Cara must see the fear in my eyes because she clears her throat, pulling my attention away from the weapon.
“It’s just a stun gun, Madison. It’s not lethal at all. Only thing it will do is bring any man down to his knees and not in a good way. You’re out there alone. If he finds you before we get things figured out, this will give you a chance at getting away.”
Thinking it over, it’s not a bad idea. Every time I have gotten away from Thomas’s henchmen, I barely escaped without them seeing me. It’s like I had a guardian angel. I always saw them first and had time to make a quick getaway before they could get a hold of me. I don’t know how much more of that luck I have, so I take the gun.
Looking between Sara and Cara, I think back over to Sara’s introduction. She said she was Cara’s sister. I’m going to assume Sara is adopted because there’s no way they’re related by blood. Cara looks to be African American with a hint of something else I’m not sure of.
Cara grabs a piece of paper and writes something down. Folding it up, she hands it to me. “I wrote down my number along with Thor, Viper, and Sara’s. If anything happens, please call.”
Nodding my head, I tucked the paper into my clutch. “I’ll call in a few days to see if Jonah is ready to talk.”
“Dice, make sure Madison gets to her car okay,” Viper orders.
I start to protest but his stern eyes let me know the attempt would be futile, so I walk out after a quick goodbye to everyone. Dice trails behind me. The party is still going on as we make our way through the room. Dice shoves several men who try to approach me, and now I’m thankful for Viper sending him with me.
Dice doesn’t say a word the entire walk to my car. He opens my door for me. I pause in disbelief. What kind of bikers are they? Dice laughs when he sees the shock on my face. He gestures a hand to my seat. “Drive safe.”
After the shock wears off, I shake my head, say “thank you” and get inside. Once I pull away, I watch the rearview mirror to see Dice walking back inside. I make it back to the motel and I scan the parking lot before getting out. I see nothing suspicious, so I make my way up to my room.
I sit on the edge of my bed and think about the hurt I saw in Jonah’s eyes when he asked if Thomas had raped me. He looked like someone was physically tearing him in two. Could I have been wrong all this time? Was Jonah under the impression I was the deceitful one, like I had done to him?
All this is making my head hurt, trying to process it. Grabbing a pair of pajamas, I get changed and get into bed. I guess today exhausted me more than I thought because I quickly fall fast asleep.
It’s been three days since the party. I wanted to call but I wasn’t ready to face him again. Today, I’m going to take the leap and contact Cara. I’m too nervous to directly speak with Jonah. My parents know bits and pieces of that night. I didn’t want them to worry more than I know they already are. All they know is Jonah is going to help me but my mom didn’t believe none of it.
She used to love Jonah, but after everything that’s happened, she too has problems trusting him. After what Thomas did to me, my mom was almost as heartbroken as I was when we found out Jonah played a part in what happened. Or should I say what we were led to believe. Apparently, this thing isn’t as simple as we thought.
Picking up my phone, I dial Cara’s number.
“Hello?”
“Hi, it’s Madison.”
“I thought you changed your mind when we didn’t hear from you over the past three days. Are you okay?”
Blowing out an exasperated breath, I respond, “I’m confused and scared. I don’t know what’s going on, but I know I can’t live like this anymore.”
“I understand. How about you come to the clubhouse in a few hours?”
“Okay. I can do that.”
After a quick goodbye, I get dressed and head to the diner for breakfast. I take my time eating until it’s time to head to the clubhouse. When I pull up to the gate, it opens immediately. Parking my car, I get out and walk toward the front door. Dice opens it before I make it fully onto the porch.
“Cara is on her way here. She lives behind the clubhouse, so she should be here any minute.”
Nodding, I follow him inside and shrink back when I see all the men standing around staring at me. Dice places a hand on my upper back, soothing me. “We’re only here to help. We still don’t know what’s going on, but based on the way Thor’s been acting over the past few days, we know it can’t be good.”
I don’t get to question him about what he means because Cara is striding through the door in the next second. She scans the room and looks at a guy I assume she’s related to. He has the same gold eyes as her.
“Chris, where is he?” she questions him.
“In his room, where he’s been for the past three days, drinking himself into oblivion.”
I glance around the room and see the worry on all their faces. Cara sighs and her shoulders drop as she shakes her head. “Time for a bit of tough love.”
She scurries off to a room and comes out a few minutes later with a pot. She heads up the hall and comes back to grab another one. Viper stops her when she tries going back up the hallway.
“Hellcat, what are you doing?”
“Honey, he needs this or he’ll never snap out of it. I’m not losing my best friend. Please, trust me right now.”
Viper releases her and she disappears down the hall yet again. I stand there nervously, awaiting what’s about to happen.
