Chapter 18

Chapter Eighteen

Honey

It doesn’t take long for the entire town to be in a buzz over our engagement. Everyone is asking when the wedding is, but J.D. and I aren’t sharing in details. The sooner the better. I’m ready for him to claim me as his wife in every sense.

Today I’m at the church giving Daisy some extra time with her solo she’ll be singing Sunday. Her voice is powerful yet she holds back. I need to help her get the confidence to unleash her talent.

“One of the girl’s at school said that I can’t sing.”

I laugh at that. Out right cackle. “Daisy you’re one of the best voices that I’ve ever heard. Don’t listen to her. She’s a talentless mean girl.”

Daisy’s eyes widen. “Brother John David said you shouldn’t speak from the flesh.”

“What about the flesh?”

“He said it’s our natural human nature to immediately hurt someone when they hurt us. Or to speak without thinking. But after we become Christians we need to reset our minds and try to rise above speaking in hate, anger, and know when to remain silent.” She gives me a pointed look. “Even Thumper in Bambi reminds us to not saying anything if we can’t say something nice.”

“So you didn’t say anything to this girl when she said something cruel to you?”

“No. I prayed on it. Brother John David said we love our enemies and pray for the ones who do wrong and try to hurt us.”

“Did it do any good when you prayed?”

She nods and her smile stretches across her face. “I remained silent and prayed. She kept right on. Then the principle heard her! She got sent to the office and her mama called.”

“Huh. Look at that. God doesn’t like bullies, either.”

J.D. comes walking in and says, “But He loves everyone.”

Daisy faces turns red and then she whispers to me, “I heard you two are getting married!”

“You heard correct.” She’s so happy for us that it makes my chest tighten. A thought comes to me and I know in my heart it’s what I should do. “Wanna sing at our wedding?”

All the color drains from her face. Finally she wheezes out, “Seriously?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Yes!” She screams. I’d never seen Daisy speak above a whisper. Her little face becomes wet with tears of joy.

“She’s more excited about our wedding than you are,” J.D. comments.

“Yeah, well she’s not the one going to be living with you. She just gets to come sing and party. I’m stuck with you forever.”
