5. Saelyn

Chapter 5

Saelyn

I was seven years old, and I only knew Felgren.

I knew it had existed forever, and I knew that it was more than a place.

Felgren lived.

It lived through the roots and earth. It lived through the giant wolves and even the smallest creatures that scuttled through the underbrush.

I laid on my back, my long hair sprawled out around me, the sun glistening through the trees, blinking hello as the breeze shifted the branches.

“Saelyn!”

I heard my name called again, but I did not wish to go. Why would I leave my bed of soft dirt and tickling grass? Why would I rise to hear a half-hearted scolding from Pah-Pah before he snuck me treats and sent me on my way?

I was seven, and I knew Felgren lived in me.

I knew that our fates were linked forever by its past and my future.

I sighed and giggled as roots of the trees twisted around my arms. Felgren wanted me to stay, too. So, I nestled more into my forest bed, closed my eyes, and ignored my name being called on the wind.
