Chapter 50

Charli

I shook the hand of the producer over his desk. “Welcome back, Charli.”

“It’s good to be back.” I reauditioned and it went better than I could have hoped for. All the extra practice I’d done because of the personal training center Hunter built for me paid off. I was stronger and more confident than before my accident.

“We’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Thank you again. I won’t let you down,” I promised.

“I know you won’t. I’m happy you’re back.”

I left the producer’s office to find Jasmine waiting outside. When I came out, she held up her hands. “Well?”

I tried to suppress the smile from taking over my face. “I’m in.”

Jasmine squealed and ran to me, wrapping me in her arms while jumping up and down. “The dynamic duo is back together again! I’m taking you to lunch.”

We walked down the Strip arm in arm and ducked into one of the casinos for their world-famous burgers. I was thrilled that Oasis took me back, but it didn’t pack the kind of punch I thought it would.

We scooted into opposite sides of the booth and the waitress dropped off two glasses of water. “This is so exciting!” Jasmine exclaimed.

I smiled as I pulled the wrapper off my straw, but it was weak at best. “Yep.”

She tilted her head to the side. “Are you not excited to be coming back?”

I wrapped the paper around my finger. “No, I am. It’s just… Hunter and I had a fight two days ago. I ended up packing my bags and leaving.”

She covered my hands with hers. “Oh, honey! I’m so sorry. What happened?”

I told her the whole story about Jennifer and how she pretended to be someone else in the park. About how Hunter’s watch went missing. About how she was always around yet barely tried to take care of Carina. About my ultimatum. When I was finished, I asked, “Am I wrong?”

“Sounds like she’s a real piece of work. What does Hunter have to say about all this?”

I bowed my head. “He said no one was forcing me to stay. That was the straw that broke the camel’s back. I thought I meant more to him, but I guess I was wrong. I think that’s what kills me the most. I really fell for him.”

Jasmine patted my hands. “I know you did, honey. If that man doesn’t see what an amazing person you are, then he’s not worth it.”

“How come that doesn’t make me feel any better?” I asked, twisting my lips to the side.

“Because he broke your heart.”
