Prologue

Things aren't always what they seem. Now if that isn't a loaded statement I don't know what is.

I am a prime example that things in life are twisted and shifty. Coming out to my parents wasn’t the greatest experience, but losing my best friend to her darkness was a real life lesson in itself.

Trying to keep her breathing and sane was a commitment that I wouldn't trade for anything. She was worth it.

Something doesn’t feel right. I was supposed to stay out of town for a little while longer, but I got an earlier flight home. Carrie has been through a lot and with the pregnancy… I just need to get to her.

Right now.

Pulling up to the house, I know that she’s not there. All the lights are off and after what Ian did she has to have a light on at all times. Opening the tracking app on my phone, I search for her.

Francis and I put a tracker on her the minute she came here. She didn’t know the area well and with her mindset we thought it would be a good idea. Now I’m glad we did.

She’s at the bridge near the house and usually that wouldn’t alarm me, but I still have this sickening feeling in my gut.

“Please hold on, Carrie. I’m on the way.”

Parking on the bridge, I can’t see anyone around. It’s nighttime, but there are still lights that illuminate the bridge and road. Throwing the door open, I climb out and race to the barrier.

“Carrie,” I shout. My heart is racing and my hands are shaking. I knew something was wrong.

Looking down into the water, it’s too dark to see anything. Turning the flashlight on my phone, I shine it below me and cry.

“No, no, no!”

My best friend lays on the bank, motionless and her skin looks almost blue.

Without a single thought, I climb over the barrier with one hand as I call Francis. Stepping carefully along the cement walkway, I move to the hill that leads down to the bank.

“Kier? You there?” So lost in my thoughts I forgot that I was trying to call someone.

My lips tremble as a sob escapes. “Francis, she jumped. She’s not moving. I’m trying to get to her now, but the bank is so slippery,” I cry as my feet slide down the muddied path.

This is hard enough to do in the daytime, let alone night.

“What are you talking about? Is it Carrie? Is she okay?” Francis screams into the phone, but I can’t speak. My thoughts are spinning and all I can think about is if she’s dead. If that bastard killed my best friend.

“ I’m hanging up and calling 911. I have your location. Save her, Kiernan.”

Hanging up, I shove my phone in my pocket and use my hands to slide down on my ass.

She looks so peaceful under the moonlight. Her skin is so pale. “Please, Carrie. I can’t lose you,” I pray as I move faster to get to her. Half of her body is still in the water, but her top half is on the bank.

Her lips are blue and her pulse is weak, but it’s there. Starting CPR, I try to hold back my sobs, so I can give her good breaths.

“Please. You can’t leave me. I swear, Care, if you hold on, I will help you. We will make those fuckers pay for ever hurting you. But you have to hold on!”

Sirens and lights take over the bridge as I continue to keep her heart pumping. I won’t stop. I can’t stop.

“Son, we have it from here. You did good, but you need to move away,” an older man says. He has a badge on his coat and a flashlight in his hand. I look up and see a few paramedics carrying a board with them.

“She can’t die,” I beg them and they give me solemn nods.

“Kiernan!” Francis screams from the bridge and I fall to my ass and just sob while watching the EMTs work on her.

A police officer is trying to hold Francis back while she screams for me. “Please, save her,” I continue to mumble, then close my eyes and pray for the first time in forever.

The night Carrie died changed us all. A new person was born in her place and for a while I thought we would never get her back. But vengeance and love has a way of changing things.

Was it for the better? I’m not sure yet, but I do know that it was necessary.

Carrie was my best friend, but Blakely became my soulmate. Which is ironic since they are the same person.
