Chapter XLVIII

Emily

T he scene before me was almost enough to make me laugh out loud if it weren’t for the deep exhaustion I felt down to my bones.

Ghost disappeared and reappeared, chasing after Jaxon who kept blinking to different spots to avoid my angry Familiar. It was like watching a paranormal version of Tom and Jerry, except in this case, it was the large Demon that seemed to be the prey.

“Can you -” blink “get your Familiar?” Jaxon called as he carefully dodged Ghost’s attempts to sink his fangs in him once more.

“You will not use my Witch in your bloody war, Demon,” Ghost hissed as he got closer to a wide-eyed Jaxon.

“Ghost,” I called, trying to get his attention.

This time, I laughed under my breath as he slithered head first into a door that Jaxon had just been standing in front of.

“Laugh it up, Witch,” Ghost said angrily, shaking his head back and forth.

“What are you on about?” I asked, stepping closer.

“Asssk your Demon,” he hissed angrily.

He apparated from the hall and I heard Jax cuss from the otherside of the door as I turned the handle.

“Back off, Familiar,” he shouted, raising a fireball in his palm. “I’m not using Emily for anything. Fuck the prophecy,” he yelled, dodging to the side to avoid another strike.

I stepped into the large office, confused as ever as I looked from my angry Familiar and back to my Demon.

“If someone doesn’t explain to me what the Hell is happening here, I will hex you both,” I shouted over them, raising my hands in warning.

“Go on, Demon. Tell her about the prophecy. Tell her how your father wants to use her,” Ghost said, slithering protectively in front of me.

“You know just as much as I do, little serpent and you heard that out of context. Yes, Cadell and I were talking, but I have no desire to involve Emily in our war,” he growled with a hard glare down at Ghost.

“Why not?” I asked, shocking them both.

They both watched me warily as I walked across the room and sat down on the edge of the desk, careful not to sit on my wings as they splayed out across my back.

Beautiful fucking nuisances.

Neither of them spoke as I waited and my eyes darted from one, down to the other.

“Why - not?” I asked again, pausing between words to punctuate my question.

“I promised your father that -,” Jaxon started, but I waved my hand.

“Fuck my father. He hasn’t been in my life since before I was born, so I ask again, why shouldn’t I be involved in the war. I am, after all, an Angel, even if it is just half. Shouldn’t I decide my future?”

I growled under my breath as they looked at each other.

“You know the prophecy, don’t you? Both of you?”

Both gave a nod of their head and I clenched my fists tightly in anger. Jaxon was one thing, but my own fucking Familiar knowing something so important and not sharing the details made my blood boil. I swallowed the lump in my throat and stood to pace the room.

“So, let me get this straight. I have a twin sister I was unaware of, a heritage that was unknown to me, and a destiny that has been prophesied since before I was born, and not a single fucking person thought that I should know about any of it?” I whisper shouted at them both, turning to face them with a hard glare.

My spine immediately straightened and my breath stalled in my chest as the door behind me opened. I glanced over my shoulder and locked eyes with Charlie. Killian held a protective arm around her waist as she shifted uncomfortably from one foot to the other.

“Hi, Sis,” she squeaked, giving me a small smile.

Her bottom lip quivered and she looked down quickly. She knew. She’d known all along and she never -, no. She was never able to tell me.

Cutting across the room, I met her in the doorway and wrapped my arms around her waist, burying my face in the crook of her neck as heavy tears fell down my cheeks.

“I’m so - hiccup - sorry,” she sobbed, clinging tightly to me as her body shook. “You must hate me.”

Pulling away, I ran my thumbs across her cheeks, drying her face, and took her hands in mine to pull her with me into the room. I looked around at the men, gave a sharp nod toward the door and one by one, they filed out.

“How long have you known?” I asked softly once we were alone.

She bit down on her bottom lip and wrapped her arms around her waist. New tears formed in her eyes as she sucked in a breath.

“Since your -, our mom died,” she whispered, looking down at the floor.
