Chapter XLIX

Emily

I felt gutted. For over twenty years, she’d known what we were, who we were, and I’d been kept in the dark.

“You died in the fire. I thought you were gone. Uriel - he took you to split us up and Agatha got me. It wasn’t until after that I learned we were Angels and it was harder to make us stay dead. We’re not immortal or anything, we can still die, but we can survive a lot.” Her eyebrows furrowed as she thought for a moment. “We’re kind of like a Phoenix, if you think about it. Anyway, Uriel wanted Lucifer to think that one of us was dead, so he hid you for a while with the mortals and brought you to us after things calmed down. Somehow, he found out we’d survived though,” she said, sitting on the edge of the desk and rocking slightly back and forth in a calming motion.

She looked just like that scared ten year old girl that I remembered holding in the wardrobe when it all happened. Crossing the room to her, I sat on the desk beside her and pulled her into my side just as I had then.

“Killian said you couldn’t tell me,” I said quietly.

I wasn’t asking. I knew in my soul that if she could have, she would’ve told me. She shook her head softly as she looked down at her lap.

“Do you have these?” I asked, tugging gently at a feather with a wince.

Note to self, don’t pull on them.

She looked up and snorted a laugh at the pained expression on my face.

“I will, but I haven’t -, I haven’t used my Angelic powers yet. Agatha forbade it. You’ve been tapping into that magic for a month, so,” she raised her arms up and flapped her hands like wings with a small smile.

I smiled back, but I couldn’t hold it. I chewed on the inside of my cheek as I looked around the room.

“So, what about the prophecy?” I asked nervously.

“Oh, well. That’s actually the one thing I don’t know,” she admitted sheepishly.

Well shit.

We were half Angel, half Witch, twin sisters, with some big mysterious destiny and hiding out in Hell while on the run from the denizens of Heaven. Oh, and we had no fucking clue what our purpose in the fated prophecy was.

What possibly could go wrong?

“Are you mad at me?” She asked timidly, her voice quivering as she glanced at me.

I stood and pulled her up from the desk, holding both hands in mine. “I could never stay mad at my sister,” I whispered, smiling for real this time.

“Good, I wouldn’t let you,” she said. “I love you, bitch.”

“I love you, too,” I laughed before asking. “Sooo, we have Mates, huh?”

A blush lined Charlie’s cheeks as she smiled bigger. “ Maritus’ , but yes. I couldn’t say anything. Goddess, I wanted to tell you, but I knew after you met Jaxon that he was yours. Can I tell you a secret, though?” She whispered.

I nodded my head vigorously with wide eyes.

“I think I have two, Killian of course, but Adri-”

“I knew it,” Jaxon shouted from the other side of the door, right before a loud smash ricocheted from the hall.

“Oh, shit. I better check on him,” Charlie said quickly, pecking me on the cheek and taking off out the door.

I laughed and shook my head. I wasn’t sure who was going to have more trouble. Her dealing with two polar opposite Mates, or the two Demons that had to put up with her.

Jaxon stepped into the doorway and waited for me to speak.

“ Maritus, huh?” I asked, as he walked into the office and closed the door behind him.

He stalked me and grinned mischievously as he approached. “My Sweet Witch, my Maritus , my Queen,” he said, backing me up against the desk. “I’ve been yours since the moment I saw you,” he whispered.

He ran his hand softly across the arch of my wing on one side and I moaned at the sensation.

“Be mine. Stay here with me and rule Voluptas by my side. War or no war, I want you beside me always,” he whispered, kissing the side of my neck.

Charlie’s words came back to me as my breath stuttered in my chest. “Emily Morningstar,” she had said and she was right, it did have a nice ring to it.

Pulling back slightly to look up into my Demon’s onyx eyes, I gave him a devilish smirk and said something I thought I’d never say, but knew I wanted with all of my heart.

“Alright, Brimstone. Why don’t you marry me, then?”
