Chapter 6 Distracted by Santa

Thursday, December 19th

The muffled phone vibration from my purse gives me an overwhelming urge to check it. Ben is on stage, a tiny caroler in a sea of red and green, singing his heart out in the school’s holiday showcase. For a second, I’m distracted, hoping it’s a message from the North Pole. Maybe Santa himself, sending a festive text instead of the usual drab notifications or spam. I really must schedule time to catch up with Saint Nick! Or is it just a fantasy? I’d really like for it to be more.

Grinning, I’m enchanted by the sight of my son and his classmates. Their angelic voices and adorable, slightly off-beat dance moves are the perfect recipe for holiday cheer. As their song wraps up, the crowd bursts into a round of applause. During the interlude, I sneak a peek at my phone.

Santa: I’ve checked my list twice, and guess what? You’re due for a foot rub and maybe a small gift or two.

A flush of excitement races through me as I whisper, “Santa” with a mix of surprise and thrill, my heart skipping a beat at this playful exchange. I quickly type a response laced with flirtation, my fingers trembling slightly.

Emily: Is Santa planning a surprise visit, or do I have to wait in anticipation until Christmas?

Santa: Why wait? I’m all for delivering joy ahead of schedule, especially for someone as special as you.

Blushing in my seat, a large smile grows on my face before I reply.

Emily: And how will you make your grand entrance? A magical key or a shimmy down the chimney?

Santa: Chimneys, keyholes, you name it, I make it work. ??

Emily: Oh, Santa, you’re such a tease!

Santa: Never. You’ve been a good girl this year.

The use of “good girl” sends me into a tailspin. I squirm in my seat, crossing, uncrossing, and then recrossing my legs. A mix of embarrassment and excitement swirl within me as I swear at myself being turned on right now, at the fucking holiday showcase.

I glance over at Ben, his innocent joy a stark contrast to the turmoil inside me. Inviting Santa over isn’t just about me; it’s about this little world I’ve built for us. What if I’m making a mistake? The responsibility of being a mother, always putting Ben first, makes me second guess my every desire.

Emily: This is so insane. Please know that I am cackling over here and enjoying all of these texts, but I have to admit … I’m hesitant to invite you over.

Santa: I understand. It’s a big request, but I promise I’m just a regular guy in a red suit. ?? I'll bring nothing but joy and good vibes.
