CHAPTER 24
***KEITH***
K eith paced up and down outside the bedroom door, counting down the seconds until he could knock again without getting yelled at by the doctor, who was patching Stella up. The man had been in the room for almost an hour, and he was starting to get worried that she had more than just a bullet graze on her side. Just as he was about to knock again, the door opened, and the doctor slipped out, his shirt covered in blood stains. His heart sank as horrible images crowded his mind.
“Is she okay?” he asked. “Can I see her now?”
“She’s doing just fine. She lost a bit more blood than I would have liked, considering…” the doctor trailed off. “I put a couple of stitches in and put her on some antibiotics. She should make a full recovery.”
“Oh, thank God, I was so worried when it was taking so long,” he said, pumping the doctor’s hand. “I’m so glad you were on the island. Send me the bill, I’ll pay whatever it costs.”
“Consider it a gift,” the doctor said, patting him on the back. “Now, get in there, Stella is as anxious to see you as you are to see her, and congratulations, you two are going to make great parents.”
He was only half listening and automatically thought of Jordan. “Thanks,” he said. “I think so, too.”
When he stepped into the room, Stella was lying against the pillows, her face very pale, tears running down her cheeks. “Oh, sweetheart,” he said, rushing over to her. “It’s all over. They took Simon away in chains. He’s never going to bother you again.”
“I know,” she said. “That’s not what I’m crying about.”
“I’m okay, see, all healed,” he said, sitting down on the bed next to her. “No one is going to come between us now.”
“You don’t know that,” Stella said, then began to sob. “I’m going to have a baby, your baby, but I’m scared you won’t want it. You still haven’t gotten used to Jordan, and it’s so soon…”
“A baby?” he interrupted her. “Did you just say that we’re going to have a baby?”
“Yes,” Stella sobbed. “I’m pregnant, Keith.”
“Oh, sweetheart, please stop crying,” he said, holding her closer trying to be careful of the wound in her side. “Of course I want our baby. I can’t think of anything that would make me happier. I love you, and I already love our child. Now Jordan will have someone to play with.”
Stella stopped crying and looked up at him. “Do you mean that?” she asked, her eyes full of hope. “I was so afraid you’d be upset, I thought you might not want it. I mean, it’s a lot with the new project and everything.”
“Stella, you and Jordan are the most important things in my life. Nothing, not even the job will ever come before you,” he said. “Now you’d better dry those tears so we can talk about our wedding. You really have no choice but to marry me now. ”
“Oh, really,” she said, a smile slowly spreading across her face. “I see, and do I get a say in this?”
“Nope, you’re mine, and it’s time the world knew it,” he said. “Marry me, Stella, make me even happier than I am now.”
“I love you, Keith,” she said. “I can’t think of anything I would like more than to be your wife.”
“I love you too, Stella,” he said. “We’re going to have a great life together.”
