Blake stepped off the boat onto the dock, a pleasant sense of anticipation running through him, and took a deep breath of the salty air, wondering what he’d been worried about. It was going to be a great vacation. He was going to get to catch up with Max, spend a lot of time in the sun, and maybe pick up a few new water skills while he was at it. He was more than ready for a little fun. Five years without a vacation had left him burned out and dissatisfied with his life, but he knew a couple of weeks of rest and relaxation would cure that.

Spotting Max standing on the shore, he grabbed his bags from the captain, thanked him, and headed down the dock. “Hey there buddy, long time no see,” he said, giving Max a big hug. “Quite the little paradise you’ve got here.”

“I’m glad you could make it, you work too hard,” Max said. “You should take more time off, and travel a little bit more.”

“The last time I did that, my life got turned upside down,” he said. “I’ve been sticking close to home since then. ”

“But you’re here,” Max said. “So, something must have changed.”

He shrugged his shoulders. “I guess it was just time to let those old ghosts go,” he said. “I’ve been chasing that memory for too long. It’s time to make some new ones. If she was supposed to be mine, it would have happened by now.”

“It’s about time you moved on,” Max said. “There are some nice single women on the island, and I could introduce you to a few.”

“Hold on, that’s a bit more than I’m ready for,” he said. “I’m here. That’s an accomplishment enough for now.”

“Whatever you say, if you change your mind, just let me know,” Max said. “Come on, I’ll show you around.”

They were almost to shore when he spotted a woman walking on the beach. For a second, he was sure it was Wren, and he paused, his heart pounding. “What’s wrong?” Max asked. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

He shook his head. “I’m sure I’m just imagining things,” he said, embarrassed. “I just thought I saw someone I knew.”
