Chapter 26

Chapter Twenty-Six

EVO

Stomping into the Med chamber, I yell out. “ Frack , LeX we need you on the dock what are you doing in here?” He is bent over the female, and all I can see around him are her tiny toes.

“ I have already lost her twice EvO , the others are just going to have to wait.”

I walk to the other side of the hover bed, watching as he inserts leads into her pale skin. While one of the Med bots is busy removing the pink substance from her exposed skin. “ What’s wrong with her?”

“ The early scans show that she has slipped into some sort of coma. The pod she was in was not calibrated to her specific medical needs. Without proper medication and due to the amount of time she was out there. Her body simply shut down. I believe the disease she has is called diabetes if my records are correct.

“ Such an easy thing to fix in our world, but deadly in theirs. At this point, I am simply trying to get her stable. Once she is, I should be able to slowly reverse the effects this disease has had on her body, but it will be time-consuming. I won’t be much longer; she is breathing on her own now. However , I am still hooking up life support just in case. I am not available and she starts to go into cardiac arrest.”

“ Can I do anything to help?” I go to push her long-wet hair off her face when LeX grabs my wrist tightly, a growl on his normally smiling lips.

“ DON’T TOUCH HER .”

I lean back slightly, pulling my arm from his impressive grip. The look on his face says it all, but I am not going to be the one to point out the obvious. Especially if this little female doesn’t make it.

“ EvO , you can return to the dock. The Med bots are programmed to handle the majority of the things that will be needed there right now. If anyone is critical, have them brought here straight away and I will deal with them accordingly. I am not leaving until I have her settled.”

“ No problem, LeX . You are the Medic here, not me. Keep me updated, and report when you can.”

“ He doesn’t even look up at me when I leave the room. His entire focus is on the little female lying helpless on the bed in front of him … his mate.”

My thoughts are heavy when I leave the Med bay. I had counted on LeX being the one who first dealt with the survivors, now I’m not sure how to proceed. I am just turning towards the dock entrance when Ember meets me outside.

“ Hey , will you and ViN give me and Qwin a few minutes? We have been talking and I think we should get this first group to help with the ones coming in later. Several of the guys are already up, most are a little lightheaded, but in much better shape than Qwin was.”

“ I have no issues with the extra help, but why do you want us to stay out here?”

“ Give us a little bit to inform them we are no longer in Kansas .”

“ What ?”

“ It’s an Earth thing.”

“ I have no idea what you are talking about, but there are several things that need my attention in the Control room. Once I have settled any issues there, I can return here shortly. Will that give you the time you require?”

“ Yep .”

Ember shuts the main door as I turn around. Growling out frustrated, as I feel like everything is keeping me from being with my Qwin . Walking into the Control room, a little bit later. My eyes seek out Rafe and ViN who are both pointing at something on the main holo screen. ViN notices me first.

“ EvO , the Destroyer is picking up random signals from this area over here, but we can’t locate anything in that region. No planets, suns, or even asteroids.”

“ Have you scanned for any other ships?”

“ Destroyer ?”

“ Negative , my mapping systems are so busy updating the incoming scans of this sector that I did not want to waste the resources. I will remedy this error immediately. This is such a remote part of space that another ship seemed unlikely. I will send drones out straight away to see if they can distinguish apparently, what I cannot.”

“ Brother , do you really think someone or thing might be out this way besides us?”

“ Who knows, but it would make a great place to hide, or be hidden.”

“ Captain , the signals are remaining steady, but the area is so far away from any light sources that any atmospheric planet found would be solid ice. Unless there is something hidden beyond my sensors.”

“ Destroyer , log everything you can about the signals. Once we get closer to SCOUT , we will have him look into it further. Until then, stay on course, we can’t sacrifice the ones we have on board for another wild chase into nothing.”

Rafe puts his arm around my shoulder, squeezing me with a big smile on his lips. “ You know EvO , there are times like these. I am so fracking happy I’m not the captain. What are you doing up here and not with that cute curvy little mate of yours, anyway?”

“ Ember asked me to give her and Qwin a moment to talk to the ones that have awakened.” ViN turns to head out the door. “ Hey , where are you going?”

“ I have been away from my mate long enough. The other humans are simply going to have to get used to us. Since we are the ones who saved them.”

Rafe turns away from me, following ViN out the door. “ One of you frackers needs to stay at the helm,” I yell out.

“ The old girl can handle it without us for a little while, EvO . You don’t think I am going to stay up here while you two have all the fun, now do you?”

“ Apparently not.” Before I realize it I have taken a step, I am right on their heels.
